Officially called the EL series when it was introduced, this V-twin engine got its "Knucklehead" nickname from the unique shape of the valve covers, which resemble the knuckles of a clenched fist. The Knucklehead, introduced in 1936, was Harley-Davidson's first overhead valve V-twin engine, and it marked a major departure from the flathead engines that the company had been using.
