The Harley-Davidson Shovelhead engine is a classic V-twin motorcycle engine that was produced by Harley-Davidson from 1966 to 1984. It earned its "Shovelhead" nickname due to the distinct shape of the rocker boxes, which resemble the back of upturned coal shovels. The engine itself was made in two sizes, 74 cubic inches (1200cc) and 80 cubic inches (1340cc) for later models. During this time, the company faced increased competition from Japanese motorcycle manufacturers and underwent an ownership change from AMF back to a group of thirteen investors led by Vaughn Beals and Willie G. Davidson.
